The short answer

Cloaked protects you. PhoneShield protects Mom.

Cloaked is a well-made privacy app: masked emails and numbers, data broker removal, a VPN, and an AI call screener for the phone it is installed on. If you are guarding your own inbox and your own phone, it is a good deal.

Scammers don't go after you. They go after your parents: the grandparent scam, the fake Medicare call, the “your account has been compromised” bank call. Cloaked's own help center says its call screening must be set up on the protected phone itself and that “you can't protect a number of another phone.” It also can't cover a landline.

PhoneShield was built for that gap. Mom's phone needs one change, call forwarding, made once on her phone. You run everything else from your own account. It answers every call on her line, mobile or landline (a forwarded landline's good calls then ring her mobile or your app). Scammers are turned away, real callers get through or leave a proper message, and the family can look up what happened to any call.

Same price, different job

Cloaked's family plan costs $29.99 a month. So does PhoneShield. Here is what each buys:

  • Cloaked's $29.99: aliases, a VPN, a password manager, data broker removal and identity insurance for four people, and a call screener that only works on the phones that install the app. None of it reaches Mom's landline, and most of it she will never open.
  • PhoneShield's $29.99: a two-tier AI front desk on the one line scammers are actually calling. Screening, blocking, messages and the calls that ring through are unlimited. 150 minutes of conversation with Nora are included, and extra minutes are $0.12 each.

Protecting both parents? Each further PhoneShield line is $19.99 a month on the same bill, so Mom and Dad together cost $49.98. Each gets a separate number, call history and app sign-in. Cloaked's family plan covers four people, but its call screening only works on the phones that install its app, and it can't cover either parent's landline. Paying yearly saves two months on either plan.

Then compare it with what is at stake. Americans over 60 lost $7.75 billion to fraud in 2025, up 59% in one year (FBI IC3). Impostor calls are one of the most common ways those scams begin. Against losses like that, a front desk for Mom's phone is cheap insurance.

Two tiers of AI, and one of them talks like a person

Cloaked uses AI too: a screener that asks why someone is calling, decides whether it is spam, and hands you a transcript. PhoneShield answers with two tiers.

Tier one, the front desk, answers every caller who isn't a favorite, asks who they are and why they are calling, and decides in seconds. Known scam numbers and scam scripts are refused, family rings straight through, and a real reason rings Mom with the caller's name on the screen.

Tier two, Nora, takes over when a caller needs more than a yes or no. Nora is a full-duplex voice assistant: she listens while she speaks, the way people do on a phone call. There is no beep, no “please hold,” no waiting for her turn. A caller can interrupt her, change the subject or ask a question halfway through a sentence, and she keeps up. She answers from the short note the family wrote for her, takes a message with name, number and reason, and sends it to the family. A scammer who gets past the front desk finds that she won't give away anything the family told her to keep private.

Take the doctor's office calling to move an appointment. A screener produces a transcript Mom may never read. Nora has a real conversation, takes the message, tells the family, and nobody misses the appointment.

Every member protects every other member

Cloaked's AI judges what each caller says. PhoneShield also draws on what every PhoneShield line has learned. Your membership protects the whole network, and the whole network protects you:

  • A shared block list. When the front desk on one family's line judges a number a scam and a second line, a known scam script or the FTC's data agrees, every PhoneShield line refuses it. A scammer turned away by other families in the morning can't get through to your mother in the afternoon.
  • FTC complaint data, every day. Numbers Americans report to the Federal Trade Commission are refused before the phone even rings.
  • Scam script matching. Scam call centers change numbers constantly but reuse their scripts. Once a pitch is confirmed as a scam on any line, the same pitch from a new number is refused on every line.

Each new member makes everyone better protected. How PhoneShield identifies scams goes deeper.

What Cloaked is

Cloaked, Inc. makes a privacy suite rated 4.6 on the App Store. One subscription includes email and phone aliases, data broker removal, dark web monitoring, a password manager, a VPN, identity theft insurance, and Call Guard, added in July 2025.

Call Guard uses call forwarding. Calls from your contacts ring as usual. Calls from numbers outside your contacts go to Cloaked's AI, which decides whether they are spam. Spam is blocked silently. Anything else rings through with a transcript, and you decide whether to answer.

To use it, Cloaked's help center lists these requirements:

  • The Cloaked app on the protected phone.
  • A US SIM with voice and data.
  • Live Voicemail and Silence Unknown Callers turned off.
  • The carrier's own spam filter switched off.
  • Not on Google Fi.

That is a reasonable checklist for a tech-comfortable adult, and a long one to talk an 82-year-old through over the phone.

Built for the person who won't set anything up

The people scammers target are the people least likely to install an app, grant contact access, and dig through settings. Any protection that depends on them doing that will be left half set up, or turned off the first time it gets in the way.

With PhoneShield, her phone needs one change: call forwarding to her PhoneShield number. Carriers only allow that on the phone itself, so it takes a carrier code or a single switch, dialed on her phone, once. Do it together on your next visit or over a video call. Everything after that is yours to manage from your own phone or computer:

  • Favorites who always ring straight through: you, the grandkids, her doctor.
  • “Expecting a call” passes for the plumber or the pharmacy.
  • A short note for the assistant: who her family is, her doctor's name, what never to share. That helps catch a stranger pretending to be her grandson.
  • A watch on forwarding. A new SIM or a phone reset can quietly switch forwarding off. PhoneShield notices and tells you.

Calls that pass ring on her phone with the caller's name. Calls that don't pass do not ring her, and you can read what the caller told the front desk.

Where Cloaked is the better choice

To be fair: if the phone you are protecting is your own, Cloaked has real strengths.

  • Privacy beyond the phone. Removing you from data brokers cuts down how many scammers find your number in the first place.
  • A toolkit for one price: aliases for sign-ups, a password manager, a VPN and identity insurance.
  • Lower price for one person: from $9.99 a month billed yearly if it is only your own phone.

You can also use both: Cloaked on their own phones, PhoneShield on Mom's line. Each covers a different line, so they never conflict.

Which one to choose

For the same $29.99, Cloaked gives four people privacy tools they manage themselves. PhoneShield gives the person scammers actually call a two-tier AI front desk, a live assistant who talks like a person, and the protection of every other member, with the family watching over it all.

If it is your parent's phone you lie awake about, give it a front desk.

Start PhoneShield for Mom's line, then set it up in ten minutes.

Questions people ask

Can Cloaked protect my mother's phone from scam calls?

Only if the Cloaked app is installed and set up on her phone. Cloaked's own setup guide says Call Guard works on the device where you set it up and that you can't protect a number of another phone. It also needs a mobile phone, so a landline cannot be covered. With PhoneShield, the only step on her phone is turning on call forwarding, once, with a carrier code or a switch; carriers require that to be done on the phone itself. The family runs everything else from their own account and can look up any call or message.

Is PhoneShield or Cloaked cheaper?

For one person, Cloaked is cheaper: $14.99 a month, or $9.99 a month billed yearly, with many privacy tools bundled. Its family plan is $29.99 a month, the same as PhoneShield's first line. PhoneShield is $29.99 a month for the first protected line, $19.99 for each further one, or $299 a year, and does one job: answering those lines' calls for the family.

Does Cloaked use AI to screen calls?

Yes. Cloaked's Call Guard forwards calls from numbers not in your contacts to an AI assistant that asks why they are calling, blocks what looks like spam or a scam, and passes legitimate calls through with a transcript.

Can I use Cloaked Call Guard and PhoneShield on the same phone?

Not at the same time. Both work by forwarding the line's calls, and a phone line forwards to one place. Choose the one that fits whose phone you are protecting.
